Situated on the eastern edge of the farm, the site we proposed and was agreed, is located on the sloped embankment between the flower\/pumpkin house and the prairie dog enclosure. It leverages the natural charm of the existing woodland backdrop and replaced the existing \u2018blackhole slides\u2019 with two striking, multi-level play silo\u2019s. <\/p>\n
These new structures create a dynamic and visually captivating addition to the area, offering an exciting upgrade to the play experience. But it's much more than just two silos. <\/p>\n
The Play Silos are a ground-breaking play intervention designed to elevate the outdoor play experience. At their heart are two striking multi-levelled play towers which redefine adventure with their dynamic design and interconnected features. These tower structures are seamlessly linked back to the embankment by fully accessible walkways, ensuring a welcoming experience for visitors of all abilities. <\/p>\n
The Silos contain a range of play opportunities to hold the attention of guests, including bridges, interactives, and a plethora of climbing apparatus. From the bottom of the towers, a ground-based playful link meanders through the landscape, guiding visitors back onto the path to continue their 700-acre adventure tour. <\/p>\n[modula id=\"22131\"]\n
Once we had thoroughly understood the site itself and the visitor flow, the design for the play silos emerged as an idea and was well-received in the proposed location.<\/p>\n

For us, beauty is always far more than skin deep, and our specialty is in creating tons of opportunities to play within and around the structures we design and build. We found this very early on that a treehouse very quickly becomes just a shed up a tree unless there is play built in. You can see from the images below how this works in reality. <\/p>\n

As you can see below, the new Haystack Hill replaces the older black slides. There was a fair amount of groundwork to create a flat platform on which to build and allow the deep layer of the protective safety flooring across the whole site. <\/p>\n

<\/h1>\nThere are two aspects to the Adventure Play at Windsor Great Park. The Woodland play for older children (and adults) and the Courtyard for toddlers and younger children.<\/p>\n
The Courtyard is a magical place for children and families to play, learn and discover together. Created as a miniature land of play amongst the local flora and fauna, the space is a gateway to the woodland and treetop walkways beyond. With undulating soft landscaping and natural pathways between, the play space is divided into a number of interconnected areas with a mixture of play houses and walkways of different heights and challenge. It's been designed to allow children to learn their own level of risk and discover the absolute joy to be found in natural play.<\/p>\n
There are also a series of beautifully crafted buildings with local shops, complete with handmade wooden tills, all surrounded by climbs, ladders and slides and roly poly slopes. You can clamber in and out of giant acorns, and pump water up to create your own controlled waterfall over the newly created sandstone rockery.<\/p>\n

The new play area for older, or more adventurous children (and adults) is set amongst the beautiful mixed woodland to the North. The treehouses, soar high into the trees and are linked by a series of awesome play structures and walkways.<\/p>\n
There are three levels of play, weaving in and around the huge mature trees, all connected with long rope bridges, wobbly walkways and a giant netted space on one of the inter-connecting decks. There are four enormous slides coming from the top of the different structures, one of which is an unusual roller slide.<\/p>\n
Within the towers there are hidden play elements, secret passages, puzzles and things to discover. There is even a seasonal interactive projection of the flora, fauna and creatures of the woodland floor that react to your own movement through the space.<\/p>\n

in November 2024, the Adventure Play At Windsor Great Park was awarded a prestigious THEA Award. The Thea Awards are often described as the Oscars of themed entertainment, and the Awards Dinner is set for March 2025 in Los Angeles. The Thea's are awarded to projects and the people that exemplify the highest standards of excellence and achievement, including individuals, parks, attractions, exhibits, and experiences in the themed entertainment industry. Ours was a winner in the Attraction, Limited Budget category<\/a>. <\/strong> <\/p>\n [modula id=\"19944\"]<\/p>\n\n You can see our initial thinking here.<\/p>\n We were working in and around some magnificent trees and it was vital they were central to the appeal of the play.<\/p>\n Here are the initial CGI's for the Courtyard Play<\/p>\n [modula id=\"15152\"]<\/p>\n And this was extended into imagining how the Woodland Play would look<\/p>\n [modula id=\"15147\"]<\/p>\n The majority of the timber used in the build was taken from fallen trees within the wider Estate and seasoned over a number of years. Having to pre-plan the amounts of almost all of the materials required did take a lot of careful consideration and very tightly controlled designs to ensure we minimized the amount of timber needed to be used from outside the Royal Estate.<\/p>\n To add another layer of local craft, we drew upon the skills and experience of the Royal thatchers to create the roofs of a number of fantastic treehouses and play structures. Our own team and other local sculptors created the oversized conkers, conker roof and carved owl, squirrel, badger, mice and red deer sculptures hidden throughout the play areas.<\/p>\n [modula id=\"15158\"]<\/p>\n\n Accessibility was a key consideration from the outset and creating play where guests with mobility issues could play alongside those who don't was a key part of the brief.<\/p>\n The very first access to the play from the entrance area is an accessible ramp. It sets the tone for the plans and delivery of fully accessible play.<\/p>\n On the edge of the woodland play, there's our own design of what we call the Companion Slide where a wheelchair user can whizz down a slide with their companion and a side bar at the base enables safe and easy access back into a wheelchair.<\/p>\n There's an accessible route throughout the woodland play that allows guests to explore high amongst the tree canopy and enjoy the wheelchair rope bridge, giant hammock nets and the sensory elements created along the route, as well as experiencing the flora and fauna living amongst the trees.<\/p>\n And there's a quiet space designed in too. Slightly tucked away at the bottom turret of the treehouse, so it's one step removed from the main play area. It's been specifically created for those visitors who may become over-sensitized by the noise and action of the play and need a bit of time away. It provides a space which can be curtained off and made dark so it's deliberately sensorily understimulating. There's a simple oak leaf light feature on the ceiling, which is backlit with calming, colour-changing LED lights. it's a simple space, but it could be the difference between a great day for all and one that you'd rather forget.<\/p>\n The wider Royal Windsor Estate is made up of approximately 6,400 hectares (15,800 acres) of undulating landscape with rolling hills and many acres of the oldest ancient woodlands in the country, with huge solitary ancient oak trees. It was the extent of this woodland and the significance of the Oak trees within them that became the inspiration for the whole design concept. Along with celebrating the flora and fauna of Windsor\u2019s extraordinary woodland, we wanted to celebrate the strength and quality of the timber as a building material and utilize it within the Adventure Play construction. Our brief was to create a quintessentially British turnkey attraction.<\/p>\n The Adventure Play at Royal Windsor Great Park<\/a>, located next to The Savill Garden opened on 12th July 2023. It's a project we started work on back in 2018 and is our most ambitious project to date, with two acres of play, made up of hand-crafted walkways, slides, sculptures and treehouses, interlinked and weaving around the established woodland.<\/p>\n The Savill Garden itself is an enclosed part of the Royal Windsor Great Park, created by Eric Savill in the 1930s. There are over 35 acres of gardens with rare plants and stunning seasonal displays. The Visitor Centre was added in 2006 and gave a new dimension to the Garden, with its rolling sinuous roof structure and green facade. You could begin to visualise how the play would come to life with the colours and the sounds of a Victorian steam-powered fun fair and reminiscent of Nottingham's famous Goose Fair<\/a>. <\/p>\n [modula id=\"21839\"]<\/p>\n\n The Thursford Christmas Spectacular was founded in the late 1970s by John Cushing, the son of steam engine pioneer George Cushing<\/a> who had been instrumental in putting Thursford on the map. In the late 1970s, 600 attendees gathered for a carol concert and numbers for what is now known as the Christmas Spectacular has increased ever since. Both John and George had been enchanted by the idea of a fair being held in the village, especially George who had grown up when Thursford was still a remote place and the only music to be heard came from the local church. For most villagers the only method of travel was by walking, or in rare cases cycling, and the bustling city of Norwich was generally inaccessible at the time <\/p>\n King Charles II opened the new adventure play on Dumfries House Royal Estate in Ayrshire as part of The Prince\u2019s Foundation\u2019s commitment to championing the benefits of nature-based play and learning.<\/p>\r\n The new adventure play area was designed to utilize the Royal Estate\u2019s existing wooded landscape and will provide local children and visitors with the opportunity to have fun together while reaping the physical and mental benefits that come with engaging with nature.<\/p>\r\n The design features a large central play tower made from sustainably-sourced UK chestnut and inspired by the treehouse at Highgrove<\/a>. The topography of the central tower complements the nearby 35-meter-high Sequoia Redwood trees while also offering an aerial view of the adjacent traditional maze, which opened in summer 2016 and is inspired by HRH\u2019s memories of his childhood visits to Sandringham.<\/p>\r\n To encourage family members of all ages and abilities to play together, the play, designed by the CAP.CO team<\/a>, also features two racing slides and a number of interactive educational elements, including a wooden finger maze that is a scaled-down replica of the maze at Dumfries House. You can see the design here in the CGI's.<\/p>\r\n [modula id=\"14582\"]<\/p>\r\n Gordon Neil, executive director of The Prince\u2019s Foundation, said: \u201cThe work of The Prince\u2019s Foundation is inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales\u2019s philosophy of harmony: that by understanding the balance, the order and the relationships between ourselves and the natural world we can create a more sustainable future.<\/p>\r\n \u201cEncouraging young people to engage with, and learn from, nature is at the heart of everything we do as a charity. We are delighted to expand the range of nature-based activities available to estate visitors with the opening of our new Adventure Playground and are very much looking forward to seeing families enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n Construction has been supported by a number of funders who support projects that meet environmental objectives including EB Scotland. There is increasing evidence that contact with nature provides a number of physical, mental and social benefits for children and the ongoing pandemic has seen a rise in the number of forest schools and nurseries opening in the UK. Thousands of school children in Scotland benefit from nature-based workshops run by The Prince\u2019s Foundation at Dumfries House every year, where they spend a day out of the classroom doing educational outdoor activities such as cultivating and harvesting vegetables in the estate\u2019s Kauffman Education Garden, learning about sustainable farming practices and rare breed animals at Valentin\u2019s Education Farm.<\/p>\r\n After being closed to the public for over 200 years, Dumfries House was saved for the nation by HRH in 2007. Since then, the sprawling 2000-acre estate on which it sits has taken on a lifeforce of its own and is now one of the nerve centers for the important philanthropic work of The Prince\u2019s Foundation, the charity of which HRH is President and whose headquarters are on the estate.<\/p>\r\n Nestled among expansive woodland, Dumfries House estate\u2019s outbuildings provide a home for a vast array of education and training programs that aim to transform lives, champion sustainability and preserve heritage craft skills that are at risk of being lost. \n\nStep right up and into a world of wonder! At Thursford, our brief was to create a magical realm that excites the imagination, sparks curiosity, and invites families to play and explore together. It needed to capture a sense of timeless enchantment, encouraging visitors to step back in time while discovering something entirely new. \n\nWe wanted to create something that enabled the visitor to discover the magic of the fairground like never before, reimagining classic rides and attractions, constructed from timber, with vintage fairground colours and classic detailing. Rides connected with high-level walkways, bridges and tunnels, across multiple levels, to create challenge, surprise, and discovery, evoking remembered childhoods while inspiring new ones. \n\nWith such a strong evocative concept and theme, the ideas flowed: a giant Ferris Wheel concealing internal climbing routes, multiple slide escape routes at different levels, offering a range of challenges, topped off with a dramatic drop slide launching from within the uppermost Ferris Wheel cabin. A classically styled Helter Skelter at the centre of the site, with an internal clamber route leading up to the highest lookout deck and the launch deck of a spiralling tube slide back to the ground. From teacup roundabouts, to vintage steam engines powering the fun fair - the concept development began to transform our vision into a world of play and wonder, one that aimed to enrich the already iconic Thursford experience - melding outdoor immersive play with the prestige and theatrical spectacle of their celebrated Christmas Spectacular<\/a>. \nThe design process<\/h2>\nFrom the earliest sketches, the Vintage Fairground theme set the tone. Big ideas like the Ferris Wheel, Helter Skelter, Carousel and classic fairground stalls quickly established the character and atmosphere of the site. \n

<\/p>\nAs the design evolved, it became about how these elements connected - how people would move through the space, how scale and sightlines would work, and how to balance breathing space around the structures while still creating an immersive, all-encompassing experience. The Playfountain Splash Pad was integrated early into the process - the first of its kind in a UK park with 100 programmable water jets creating playful patterns in time with music, even down to a control box which we themed as an old Victorian organ. \n\nOther layers added energy and alternative play experience, like a winding dodgems-inspired Kart Track, weaving in and out of the play structures. <\/p>\nBackground<\/h2>\nSituated in the small village of Thursford in North Norfolk, this much-loved attraction is home to the world-famous Christmas spectacular, Santa\u2019s magical journey and the year-round steam engine and organ museum, hosting the largest collection of its kind anywhere in the world!\n\nWhile the renowned Christmas shows draw the majority of visitors, our role was to help Thursford build on that success and create an attraction with the same appeal year-round.\n
