Poringland School in Norfolk is a long-time friend of CAP.CO<\/a> and has always believed that self-discovery and co-operation through play and interaction is critical to personal development for their pupils. This is reflected in their vision and values statement<\/a> where they want to help create happy, active, inspired, healthy learners. So, when they leave, they will be well-equipped for life: <\/p>\n

- With a desire to learn, inspired by innovative teaching and active learning;\n- With the skills and self-belief to enable them to succeed;\n- With the confidence to solve problems, welcome challenges and to be independent learners, who have a love for learning.<\/p>\n

Children will understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle. They will have a respect for others and a sense of moral responsibility as citizens in a modern world. <\/p>\n

So, during one of our regular catch-ups with their team, we discussed the idea of a workshop for their children to help plan and design a whole new type of play, and how it should come to life.<\/p>\n\n

Workshop visit and brainstorming<\/h2>\n

A workshop visit was organized with a team from Poringland. Bringing a large group of children into a workshop does take a fair amount of planning. Our team were all excited for the day and maybe went over and above in the meticulousness of their planning, to ensure the kids got real value from their day and had great fun too. <\/p>\n

Each of the children were involved in the process to create a new type of play that would allow them to bring the essence of their school values to life. After a day of work, deliberation and fun, they all agreed that the word was 'Kindness'. <\/p>\n\n

Bringing the design to life<\/h2>\n

One aspect of the day planning with the Poringland kids was getting an understanding of what fun looked like to them. What did they really enjoy and what was less fun for them to enjoy together? <\/p>\n

The key was active fun together, as individual play is rarely fun for long and interaction with friends is what really brings play to life.<\/p>\n

So, with their help we already had the basis of how the play would link and what each letter could include in terms of its individual play value.<\/p>\n\n

Prefabrication<\/h2>\n

The prefabrication planning began and each of the individual letters that makes up the word 'Kindness' was pored over by our technical design team. This was to enable our steel fabricators to create a frame behind that would support the letters, allow them to link together with the planned play and be well supported in the ground, so there was no movement and also no hazard, in case of a fall from the finished play equipment. <\/p>\n

And then the prefabrication began, ready to be loaded onto a trailer for delivery and installation. Installation only took two days as all the site work had been done and the letters themselves were fully finished. <\/p>\n

The finished job<\/h2>\n

Seeing the finished play coming to life with children playing together was quite something. In the words of Pete Dean, the inspirational Head of the school. <\/p>\n

\"The Poringland playground has been lit up by KINDNESS, a trim trail spelling out a key value of the school. The impact of this build on staff, parents and children is like nothing I have ever seen at any school.\"<\/p>\n

In a simple study carried out by the school with their children, they asked them what their values were as a school. Whilst they could all recall most of the values, the one that was 100% top of their list was Kindness. <\/p>\n

The project has had a profound impact at Poringland for the whole community. Children learn through play and playgrounds can be transformed to encourage play, health and happiness! This feels very much like the future. <\/p>\n

Barrow Hills is a small, happy school with around 220 children aged 2-13 years and a family-centred ethos. With a focus on forest school style outdoor education in its acres of woodland, it's a place where children can be children and learn through exploration and develop through play, as well as academic excellence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Our brief<\/h1>\r\n

Our brief was to make use of the beautiful natural setting at Barrow Hills School, with the proposed play structures engaging and immersing the children in the wonderful woodland.<\/p>\r\n

The design aims to provide creative and challenging play for a range of abilities. It is packed with features from high-level walkways, slides, a lookout nest with wobbly net bridge to it, and even a bucket pulley system.<\/p>\r\n

The area also provides a space for a quiet moment in nature during the busy school day. It is a place where children can unleash their imaginations and collaborate in new ways.<\/p>\r\n

The adventure play has been created from natural materials to help it blend seamlessly into the natural environment.<\/p>\r\n

\"Barrow<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The play<\/h1>\r\n

The play starts with a tree deck accessed via a spiral staircase and connects to a V-bridge that takes you up into the trees with the option to come back down via a slide to ground level.<\/p>\r\n

The V-Bridge walkway weaves its way towards the next tree and netted walls make you feel the height of the trees. The second tree deck features access from ground level via a cargo net and an exciting exit via the slide.<\/p>\r\n

There's a netted tunnel that's accessed by climbing up to a height of 3m in the crow's nest. It's been designed so that only the most daring will go through the crawl space to let you get a view of the floor below.<\/p>\r\n

At the very top is the Crows Nest, which is high up in the trees and takes you to a viewpoint that will allow you to see far and wide. With a nest-like appearance using stick cladding and featuring a bucket and pulley system for interactive, collaborative play.<\/p>\r\n

Welcome to the Boundless Playground, which sits within WindReach in Bermuda<\/a>. Our brief for this project was to design and develop an inspiring, bespoke playground for children and adults that offers a magical, inclusive experience for all visitors to WindReach, regardless of their abilities.<\/p>\n

WindReach is an accessible facility in Warwick, Bermuda that extends over 4 acres and features a multi-purpose Activity Centre, Petting Zoo and Therapeutic Riding Centre. It's unique in Bermuda in that it offers therapeutic and educational experiences for people with a variety of physical and intellectual abilities. Today around 200 visitors benefit from their programmes on a weekly basis, ranging from preschool to seniors.<\/p>\n

Bermuda is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, around 1,000 km east of North Carolina. Its character is closer to that of the Caribbean however, due to a subtropical climate and its vibrant culture, shaped by centuries of historical cultural influences. Though the archipelago was uninhabited when it was claimed and named by the Spanish in 1503, it has since gathered clear influences from the Spanish, the Dutch and the English. Today Bermuda is a self-governing British Overseas Territory.<\/p>\n

Although usually referred to in the singular, Bermuda is in fact made up of 181 islands with a total land mass of only 20.5 square miles. Bermuda has a population of around 71,000, many who work in insurance related industries. With its climate and stunning beaches, it\u2019s no surprise that Bermuda is a popular destination, and tourism is the island's second biggest industry.<\/p>\n

[modula id=\"13472\"]<\/p>\n

This melting pot of cultures has fed directly into the architecture across the island, which is where we drew inspiration for our design. Bermuda is within a hurricane zone, so rooflines have minimal overhangs and consideration is always given to the prevailing winds from the South West. There's also a lovely feature on many buildings, known as 'Welcoming Arms<\/a>' stairs, which open out as they reach the bottom in a welcoming gesture. There are also some fabulous, crazy sign posts which point to destinations around the world. All of these fired our imaginations and led into our designs for play.<\/p>\n

[modula id=\"13487\"]<\/p>\n

The design and build was paid for through a campaign of fundraising activities, driven by the local charity MAMA (Meet a Mum Association<\/a>). The new playground replaces one which was well loved and well used, but had reached the end of its life. The new playground also introduces a whole new level of accessibility to allow children and adults of all abilities to play together.<\/p>\n

[modula id=\"13488\"]<\/p>\n

The CAP.CO team were on site for just under two months to complete the build<\/a>. The build was scheduled outside of hurricane season, and we were fortunate with the weather. Naturally, undertaking a build project on a small island required careful consideration and planning. Close collaboration with the team at WindReach and a strategic approach from our build team meant the project build went exactly to schedule. The colours and materials for the play structures referenced local architectural cues to the letter and it immediately felt as though the project belonged in its new home.<\/p>\n

One play feature that was created for Boundless was a newly designed companion slide that followed the design of the welcoming arms stairs and allows two people of differing abilities to slide down together. It ensures a simple transition from the slide to a wheelchair below.<\/p>\n

Hanbury First School in Worcestershire is a primary school for children aged 4-9 and currently has around 135 pupils. Our project was to create a new adventure play area, to celebrate the life of one of their beloved classmates.<\/p>\r\n

Leo Mercer died suddenly, shortly after joining his brother, Finley as a pupil at Hanbury School in September 2022.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cHFS Leo\u201d is a play area with a bespoke two-storey play ship designed in collaboration with the Mercer family to incorporate many of Leo's favourite things.<\/p>\r\n

The playground ship sits in a peaceful, secluded spot wrapped with trees and lies right next to the main playground with stepped access. It's a two-storey ship-themed play structure that offers the children of Hanbury the ultimate place for imaginative play, with little celebrations of Leo in every corner.<\/p>\r\n

Incorporating a climbing net, ladder, slide, giant steps, telescope, ship's wheel and play map, the ship has huge play value and creates a great source of fun and adventure for the various age groups at the school.<\/p>\r\n

The lower level of the ship has three points of access to the upper deck. Giant \u2018cargo\u2019 steps inside, a clamber net and a ladder access on the outside. The upper deck holds the imaginative play items with the ladder, clamber net and slide being the access points back down.<\/p>\r\n

The collaborative nature of the design meant that we incorporated elements of Leo's special character into the design, including Leo\u2019s favourite colour green to the window trims and ships' flags. Bespoke play elements such as the way-finding map reflect his personality. The interactive map, mounted to the ship's walkway includes references to some of Leo\u2019s favourite things.<\/p>\r\n

There are different locations and islands that the children can \u2018sail\u2019 to such as \u2018Dandelion Dock\u2019, \u2018Blackberry Bay\u2019, \u2018Rhino Rock', 'Dino Dunes\u2019 and \u2018Wildflower White-waters\u2019. On the opposite side of the walkway to the map, there\u2019s a \u2018destination spinner\u2019 which has each of these locations on a different segment and children can spin it, to see where they should be navigating that day.<\/p>\r\n

The play was opened recently with the family being guests of honour, along with some of Leo\u2019s friends enjoying the play together.<\/p>\r\n

Mundesley School in the village of Mundesley on the Norfolk coast, a little south-east of Cromer, is part of the Coastal Federation group of schools<\/a>. The three schools in the group all share an ethos and values that we love.<\/p>\r\n

Their aim is \"To ensure our children are effective communicators, confident individuals, successful learners and responsible citizens. We want them to be healthy and active. As well as feeling safe and nurtured. We promote the ethos that every child should be included and respected so that they can reach their full potential.\"<\/p>\r\n

In addition, they they are aiming to shape children to be resourceful, collaborative, curious, reflective, creative and resilient. All of these values overlay perfectly with adventure play and enabling children to understand and manage risk<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

There are two adjacent schools on the same large site that house around 97 infants and 108 juniors. in this diagram, you can see the location of the two school buildings.<\/p>\r\n

\"Mundesley<\/p>\r\n

Our brief from the outset was to create two distinct areas for infants and juniors. With the infants, we used a mound to create a focus for the build, along with a stage to allow performances and blackboards for outdoor teaching and impromptu illustrations.<\/p>\r\n

For the juniors we designed it to nestle within a copse and create a view across the school and playgrounds from a lookout tower. There's an escape slide to add some additional fun and just enough inherent risk designed in to make it a challenge for children to grow into as they learn and extend their own limits.<\/p>\r\n

The project was funded by a grant made available to schools to support their teaching, sports and personal development goals.<\/p>\r\n

We're delighted with the results and when you see the following images, it's pretty clear that the young people of Mundesley school are too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Poringland is a village, five miles south-east of the City of Norwich. The village is perhaps most famous for the painting of the Poringland Oak, by John Crome, that hangs in the National Gallery in London. During the Second World War, the village was only home to around 500 people, but due to its proximity to the city and the fact that it sat on relatively poor land for farming, has since grown quite rapidly to nearer 5,000 at the 2011 census.<\/p>\r\n

The school itself opened in 1967 to 460 pupils, saw a steady decline to around 210 in 1982 and has grown again to around 440 pupils today. It's now under the inspirational headship of Peter Dean, affectionally know as Pirate Pete by the CAP.CO team.<\/p>\r\n

The site has a central playing field with woodland that surrounds it and some unused space near the school itself. Our first job in phase one was to create an early years classroom outdoors that creates a multi-use space of around 10mx10m. It links seamlessly into the school building and takes the children over a covered bridge to reach their destination. At the same time, working with Pete and his team, we created the new adventure play in the woodland area.<\/p>\r\n

\"Poringland<\/p>\r\n

The vision was to get children outside, playing and learning together in the natural environment<\/a>. This outdoor play also had a covered area that allows informal teaching and even includes a blackboard. This is used for role play, performances along with dry(ish) play when it rains.<\/p>\r\n

From the initial sketches and getting a better understanding of the site, we worked up some of our usual CGI's so the team could start to imagine the size and scale of the proposed build.<\/p>\r\n

With the success of phase one, a short while later and after some exceptional fund-raising by Pete and his board of Governors, we returned to Poringland for Phase 2 of the build. This saw us extend into the surrounding woodlands with a more rustic and adventurous play build. We created longer runs of ground play and then a challenging climbing wall, perfect for the game of 'the floor is lava<\/a>' or whatever you may term that brilliant pastime from your own childhood (normally played at home across any piece of furniture, curtains, pets and door frames \ud83d\ude00).<\/p>\r\n

The play weaved its way around the trees drawing children of different ages to play and discover together. There's even a zip-wire for some fast flying fun.<\/p>\r\n

The last piece in the play jigsaw was a ship-shape play structure, now christened HMS Rainbow, as a thank you to the work of our fabulous NHS.<\/p>\r\n

The project was funded through a series of initiatives. The incredibly active and committed School PTA held fundraising events to pay for much of the work and the rest was achieved through grants and the Sports Premium.<\/p>\r\n

It's a project that has been delivered by a team of leaders, teachers and parents who are striving to improve the education of the children in their care. We love this way of thinking and rather than treating these smaller school projects as our bread and butter work, rather like the teams we work with, we throw every ounce of passion we have into helping them deliver their vision.<\/p>\r\n

The final build is a beautiful thing and comes to life in these images.<\/p>\r\n

Eccles School in Quidenham, Norfolk is an independent school<\/a> that supports students with communication challenges and learning difficulties. With around 170 students, it provides specialist education for children ages 7-16 years who experience difficulties learning in mainstream environments.<\/p>\r\n

The school itself sits in a beautiful natural setting in the Norfolk countryside and is surrounded by woodland.<\/p>\r\n

Our proposed play structures were designed to take children up into the treetops, and over the high school fence, allowing them to believe they are able to escape the confines of school!<\/p>\r\n

The design aims to provide creative and challenging play for a range of abilities. It is packed with features from high-level walkways, slides, a fireman\u2019s pole, lookout nest and talking tubes, also providing reflective spaces for a quiet moment during the busy school day. It is a place where children can unleash their imaginations and collaborate in new ways.<\/p>\r\n

The plan was made up of a number of key elements to offer play and interest for the wide ranges of ages the school caters for.<\/p>\r\n[gallery columns=\"2\" size=\"full\" ids=\"14337,14339\"]\r\n\r\n \r\n

Working in and around the natural woodland landscape, we designed the play to maximise above ground play whilst always giving consideration to safety and to encourage managed risk by the pupils<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n[gallery columns=\"2\" size=\"full\" ids=\"14340,14341\"]\r\n\r\n \r\n

The plan for the play was as follows:<\/p>\r\n

A multi-level play deck set 2m above ground level, with ladder and spiral step access routes, as well as a double slide for side by side fun and blackboard for impromptu teaching and mark making on the lower level.<\/p>\r\n

Below this is the ground play trail made up of balance beams and log hops leading to the tower. To the side of this is the treehouse lookout nest. This is a 3m high deck above ground level, built high in the tree for wide-reaching views with a talking tube connecting all the way to the \u2018Secret Tower\u2019.<\/p>\r\n

An open bridge leads onto the middle tower. This is a 2.5m high deck above ground level, with a cargo net to clamber up and down that is in turn connected to a covered bridge that takes adventurers over the school fence and into the tower beyond. It's covered with netting to prevent climbing out whilst maintaining natural light and a sense of enclosure.<\/p>\r\n

On the other side of the fence is the secret tower. A 3m high deck above ground level, with a roof height of 7.5m above ground level, providing a covered space up in the trees, with a characterful wonky roof clad with timber boards and cedar shingle decoration. Inside there is seating around the sides and a large netted window view into the woods beyond. A perfect place for taking some time out and chatting with friends.<\/p>\r\n

All a little bit of a fairy tale in a beautiful bit of woodland really!<\/p>\r\n

Eureka! Mersey isn't a children\u2019s museum nor a traditional science center, or anything to which it could be easily compared. It has its own distinct identity that comes from the co-creation process, with 120 children and young people involved in the collaboration process.<\/p>\r\n

It is the sister to Eureka! The National Children\u2019s Museum in Halifax, that opened in 1992, with this new site expected to attract around 180,000 visitors every year and contribute \u00a312m to the local economy by 2032<\/p>\r\n

It's focused around STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) but designed to bring these subjects to life through fun, exploration, experimentation and designed to encourage curiosity.<\/p>\r\n

Within this museum, we created a hero exhibit, the Climbing Tree which provides both a physical clambering and immersive experience within the central void space of the museum and visible from the car park, entrance and ticketing areas. You can see how that fills the available space over the two-plus stories here.<\/p>\r\n

This key feature within the space builds excitement and provides a teaser or glimpse of things to come as they journey through the space.<\/p>\r\n

The CGI's show it would come to life and the scaling of the feature itself.<\/p>\r\n

Offering multiple levels of explorative play, the Climbing Tree is designed to be suitable for all ages and abilities. You can see the finished play structure here, which is incredibly close to the initial CGI illustrations.<\/p>\r\n

When it comes to the even younger visitors, we have created the Field Mouse Nest. This is an interactive feature within the under 5\u2019s area. It's an oversized nest-like structure that provides a safe, educational and intriguing space to cater for young adventurers to the museum.<\/p>\r\n

The early CGI's show how it fits the stye of the rest of the build and offers fun and interactive play for the under 5's.<\/p>\r\n
